Declan Costello Wins the big one

Last Sunday saw our Captains Prize finale take place and what a great day we had. Like the recent Presidents Prize that big time competition feeling was most certainly evident.

The normal nonchalant approach of getting out of the car and casually walking on to the first tee or in the case of many of us of who struggle out of the sack, the hurried trot through the hallowed gate, sorry lads the dog ate the me homework being replaced with jostling for space on the putting green and at the practice net well early.

The course played long with little run on the ball and this was reflected in the scores with 3 82’s being the best gross scores on the day. As in the first round we only had one sub 70 round this being returned by the worthy winner on the day Declan Costello (19). Declan added a sublime 68 nett to his very solid 72 from Round 1 to win by a single shot from Damien Hickey (19) who added a 71 on the day to his 70 in Round 1. Brilliant effort Damien well done and great to see some of our newer guys feature strongly in the big ones. Declan Costello is one of the many great characters in our club and always brightens the day of the people he meets and chats too on and around the course and clubhouse.

Congrats Dec and well done on winning the Big One. In 3rd spot we had Donie McEvoy (10). Donie the epitome of steadiness added a 73 to his first round total to finish on 144. Round 1 leader Joe O Toole added a 75 to his 69 to finish a shot back on 145 and claim Cat 2 honors. Pat Mc Enroy (21) added a 76 to his round 1 score of 71 to win Cat 3. The best gross score over the 2 rounds was returned by Kevin Byrne on 163, well done Kev one of the many great players we have luckily attracted onto the blessed 9 this season folks. The legendary or is it the infamous??? Pat Brady (12) took the honour’s in the best first round score prize Cat with a 72. 2nd round honour’s went to ever popular Dennis Hennessy (18) with a 75. Well done Dennis.

Some interesting Gross score stats, only one player Kevin Brady broke 80 over the 2 rounds. Only 6 players scored in the eighties or better in both rounds. Only 25 birdies over the 2 days. 100% of competitors wore shoes on both feet for the entirety of their round. The 4th and 18th holes played as the hardest holes on the final day. Arsenal will be relegated. Talk soon folks.
