JB Carr Defeat to Charlesland

Another very close match was played today against Charlesland GC

PG Byrne and Sean Feely fought hard but were beaten on the 16th hole. Donie Mc Evoy and Nick Mc Hardy fought against the tide and came from behind to be one up on the 18th only to see tide turn once more and they lost their match on the 19th hole.

John Kelly and Brian Hogan went about their business in military style and closed out their match on the 16th hole. Danny Lynch and Stephen Peake are at this stage one up and about to play the 17th par 3. Stephen hit a great tee shot onto the green 20 foot from the pin and Danny with his unique putting style like the recoil from a rifle shot the ball into the hole for a birdie to win their match. From here it was a quick dash up to the 18th par 5 where Eddie Seery and John Messit were all square. Both balls were on the green but the men from Charlesland had two putts for the win. They took their first putt, Eddie had a look and raised his arms in a jovial display of surrender. We were beaten 3-2

The men from Charlesland were very gracious in their victory and made us feel very welcome all day
As for our lads there was no need for bowed heads they played like the gentlemen they are and there day will come. Of that I have no doubt

JB Carr team off to a winning start

After going out in the the first round of the Leinster four ball and the Barton cup it was great to see our lads win their first match in the JB Carr playing against a very strong and a fine group of gentlemen in Greystones golf club

All the matches were very close Donie Mc Evoy and Nick Mc hardy won their match on the 18th PG Byrne and Brian Hogan lost theirs on the 16th John Kelly and Noel Searson lost theirs on the 18th Eddie Seery and John Messit won their match on the 18th after John hit a fine shot onto the green and Eddie did what had to be done to win that game.

So it all boiled down to Stephen Peake and Danny Lynch who at this stage had halved their match on 18 and had already moved to the 19th hole where Greystones looked well in command but somehow after a pressure put by Stephen we got the half . On 20 the role reversed this time it was Danny who had the pressure put and put it he did right in the middle for another great half and so on to the 21st a very long par 4 index 3 where Stephens drive was the choice Danny hit a good shot up to in front of the green and Stephen chipped on this left Danny with a fourteen foot slippery put Danny took it on no questions asked and played a very good shot the ball was now three feet away from the hole yet another pressure put this time for the win Stephen stepped up as cool as ice and rolled it in . Both Stephen and Danny were very quickly congratulated by everyone who had been following this very exciting finishing match.

The Battle of Greystones

The battle lines were drawn
For the J.B.Carr golf fixture
Not quite pistols at dawn
A high and low handicap mixture
Greystones club stood in the way
Their local knowledge to overcome
A last close match won the day
The opposing crowd struck dumb
The Sugarloaf cut a great backdrop
To the home teams sad demise
A sentry to the Boystown victory hop
The Lakes minnows giants in disguise
At the dinner no chestbeating exhibition
A modest shot retelling to our host
Of a close match by all admission
At the golf course by the coast
At the appointed hour we bid farewell
Before our long happy drive home
Leaving behind the seaside smell
And the inspiration of this poem.

Captain’s Drive In Report

The 2013 season officially got under way this morning with the Captain’s Drive In. This was our first major competition of the year.

A fantastic turnout of nineteen teams of four players entered the competition, an eighteen-hole Texan Scramble. The morning began in the traditional way with the two captains, Suzanne Hegarty and Pat Brady, hitting a symbolic drive from the first tee. They were watched by the large gallery, many of whom were hoping to see at least one of them duff their shot. Happily, however, both drives sailed long and true down the middle of the fairway.

The winners were Conor Steed, Billy Walsh, Noel Billane and Philip Wardick. Runners Up were Sean Farrell, Denis Hennessy, Rory Niland and Angela Seery.

The two captains, Suzanne and Pat thanked their playing partners and guests after returning a respectable gross score.

At the prize-giving, both Captains commented on the outstanding condition of the course, particularly the greens. They looked forward to their year in office, playing golf amid spectacular scenery on an excellent course, among their many friends at Blessington Lakes GC.
